The Knight in the Panther's Skin in 50 languages

Georgia is this year’s Guest of Honour at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. Visitors will gain an insight into the country’s great literature tradition at the reading marathon that takes place on 21st June at Goethe University Frankfurt. The centrepiece of the evening will be Georgian literature’s most important epic, Schota Rustaveli’s “The Knight in the Panther's Skin”. The heroic poem, which was written in the 12th century, tells the story of two couples whose fates intersect and depend on each other in unexpected ways. It has been shared orally in Georgia for centuries and has influenced the whole country’s self-perception considerably over the years. It has also been translated into many languages, including German, and has been on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register since 2013.
